What is your new year’s mantra?

The art of becoming.

I love typography. I love how the way you craft and shapes letters convey meaning.

During the past couple of years, I have like been inspired by friends and sites like Scripture Type* to meditate on God’s truth and promises through the art of typography. I am often prone to worry about the many things of this world and in my life, but God has been so faithful in teaching me how His Word guards my heart from the schemes of the evil one. How indeed when I cast my cares on Him, He cares for me, holds me and gives me His peace that transcends all understanding.

It has been an incredible journey walking with Christ, day by day, through the deepest valleys and mountain highs. He has been my one and only constant. My Advocate and Defender when I am weak.

A phrase I have been meditating on lately is “FAITH over feelings.” To choose to trust God and have faith even when you feel overwhelmed, like the world is going to crash around you. To have your faith and hope be an anchor for your drifting, wandering soul.

In my design, I choose to make the letters for FAITH thick and solid. It is filled in with gold, as Peter describes genuine faith as being more precious than pure gold, which perishes even though refined by fire. (1 Peter 1:7).

The tree shows how blessed is one who meditates on God’s Word is like a “tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither — whatever they do prospers.” (Psalm 1:1–3). That being “rooted and built up in Him” is the most beautiful thing. (Colossians 2:7).

The letters for FEELINGS was drawn with squiggly lines because feelings can be flimsy; they come and go and often don’t last. Even though feelings serve a purpose in teaching us about ourselves and others, it is cannot serve as a sufficient and complete compass. If we rely on our feelings alone, they leave us empty inside (hence the letters aren’t filled in.)

This phrase reminds me that there’s a reason for everything I have gone through. That I can and am living for something, Someone beyond myself. That there is freedom in letting go. There is freedom in trusting God even when I don’t “feel” like He’s there or don’t “feel” like trusting Him. He’s there. He’s holding me, holding you. He will heal and give rest to our weary souls. What is your new year’s mantra?

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” (Joshua 1:8).

tl;dr — Typography is awesome. Meditating on God’s Word is awesome. Meditating on God’s Word using typography is awesomest. I’m learning to have faith over feeling, as faith is an anchor for my soul. What is your new year’s mantra?
